The Anzalduas Border Crossing project is receiveing $1.25 million in funds from the Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce, according to an announcement by Texas Congressmen. “This funding will promote both the local economy and international trade,” said Representative Lloyd Doggett, a senior member of the influential House Ways and Means Committee. “It means local construction jobs now and increased commerce over time as the new Anzalduas Border Crossing increases the trade and travel that is vital to the Valley’s economy.” Texas Senator Kay Baily Hutchinson, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said it is expected that more than 80 new jobs and more than $2.6 million in private investment in the Lower Rio Grande Valley will result from this grant. “I congratulate the cities of Mission and McAllen on this work to secure this grant,” Hutchinson said. “This is an important investment for the people of the Rio Grande Valley. Partnering with the private sector, local officials will use this grant to strengthen and sustain the Valley economy. The EDA funding will provide water and wastewater infrastructure and improvements to the Anzalduas Border Crossing. In June, Doggett, who is from Austin but represents part of Hidalgo County, including Mission, had announced that the U.S. House approved $7.478 million in the Treasury-Trasportation Appropriations bill for a new Customs and Border Inspection Station to serve the Anzalduas Bridge, which will connect new highways linking industrial areas of central Mexico to customers in the northeast United States. The announcement of the funding also was made by U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez. “President Bush and I are committed to partnering with communities to promote innovation and competitiveness,” said Gutierrez. “Through economic development grants like these, the Commerce Department will continue to encourage investments in local areas, grow the economy and create jobs.”
