U.S. VISIT Entry-Exit System

DHS has begun to implement a full entry-exit system

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has begun to implement a full entry-exit system-called the U.S. Visitor and Immigrant Status Indication Technology (US-VISIT) system. US-VISIT will create an electronic check-in/check-out system for foreign visitors, including students, tourists, and business travelers, and will require the use of at least two biometric identifiers, such as fingerprints, when entering and leaving the country.

Visitors who enter the U.S. would be checked against a list of people who "should be denied entry" in the U.S., and upon leaving, the system would verify his/her identity and departure information, time and date. The DHS has also implemented an "entry system" I-94 Visa requirements for Mexican Nationals traveling beyond the 25-mile commercial zone of the border region (15% of total crossings).

However, Senator John Cornyn successfully changed the plan from a 72-hour rule to 30-days for Mexican Nationals. Now, Mexican Nationals are able to stay within the 25-mile commercial zone of the U.S. border with a laser visa card. Thus, the positive economic impact from Mexican Nationals who cross the border regularly to shop in the Mission area will only continue to improve.
