Ranked as the fourth fastest growing metropolitan area in the United States, the Mission/McAllen MSA had a growth rate of 48.5%in 1990-2000 according to the U.S. Census. The population increases over the last decade have led to an increase in all industries. The growth of maquiladoras in Reynosa, Mexico, our southern neighbor, has spurred industrial growth on the U.S. side.
Citrus and other agricultural products have always played a large role in our economy. Tourism is also strong in the community. The friendly climate and historical ambiance have been major draws for the "Winter Texans". During the winter months, Mission's population surges by over 25,000 as these visitors stay to enjoy all the amenities offered in the Mission area. Their impact in terms of spending is significant.
Mission has focused on creating a positive business climate, which is demonstrated by the creation of the Mission Economic Development Corporation and Mission Economic Development Authority. Working with the Mission Chamber of Commerce, these organizations work together with the city to create a dynamic business environment to support continued growth and development.
